SOUTHWOLD

Suffolk

THE CLIENT BRIEF:

To create a garden that takes inspiration from the garden at Charleston, the country home of the Bloomsbury set. The client spent much time there as a child as her godmother lived there.

It also had to have a large terrace suitable for both cooking and eating outside as the property is let for holidays for much of the year.

THE GARDEN:

The planting is designed to be particularly interesting during peak holiday season (spring to autumn), with fruit trees and the pergola providing more structural interest in the winter months. The large terrace is divided using lower height Rosemary hedges to create two different seating areas.

A second paved area is covered with a larch pergola, planted with Wisteria and a purple Grapevine for those who like to sit in the shade. A beautiful red rose that was already in the garden climbs up one post. Its existence dictated where the pergola stood.

The plants used include Lavender, Rose, Melianthus, Agapanthus and lots of self-seeding Larkspur.
